Colonial Lanterns

Except for the barn lanterns that have no glass, lanterns feature authentic bubble glass panels, with irregularities and impurities that were characteristic of the glass of the time period. Each lantern is hand-made and dimensions may vary slightly from those listed.

Small Half Round Circa 1803

Patterned after the original lantern found in Thomas Worthington's Mansion called Adena, which is located in Chillicothe, Ohio. This lantern was thought to be used as a privy lantern.

This small round-back lantern features a sliding bubble glass front and authentic starburst punch pattern on the rear of the lantern. Features a wire hoop handle as the original did.

Dimensions: 5 1/2 inches wide by 13 1/2 inches tall.

Baby Colonial Circa 1810

This small rectangular three glass sided lantern was popular towards the end of the Colonial period. With sliding back door and wire handle, it was easier and faster to produce than it's big brother The New England when demand was high during the push westward.

This lantern is also available with a solid back and reflector for wall mounting for an additional charge. Please specify when ordering.

Tri Corn Lantern Circa Approximately 1805

This small triangular shaped lantern has two glass panels and a tin back door that slides open. Round tin handle for easy carrying.

Shown from side/front at left, side/rear on the right.

These small triangular lanterns were popular in Colonial times. Easy to pack and take along as they don't take up much space.

Dimensions: 6 3/8 inches wide by 13 5/8 inches tall.

Small Barn Lantern Circa 15th Century to 19th Century

Sometimes erroneously called the Paul Revere Lantern. An original of this lantern is in the Ross County Ohio historical society. This small lantern features no glass and is completely covered in punch pattern work. It was often used with the door open, but when carrying or used in the barn the door was closed to prevent fires.

This is a very primitive style lantern utilizing hand seaming instead of the more expensive solder joints, and without glass. At the time this lantern was used, glass was quite expensive.

Dimensions: 5 1/4 inches wide by 15 1/2 inches tall.

Large Half Round Circa 1803

A larger version of the Small Half Round. This style of vent top is period correct for very early 19th century. 

Starburst, Tree of Life, or Hex tin punch work are all authentic to the period. Please specify pattern when ordering.

Large Barn Lantern Circa 15th to 19th Century

This larger version of the Barn Lantern is more indicative of the early Colonial style. Like the small barn lantern, this style is completely covered with punch style sides and absence of glass. It was the workhorse of the times.

At a later time (19th Century) glass was sometimes added to the door, as glass was more readily available.

Dimensions: 6 1/2 inches wide by 19 inches tall.

Ship lantern Circa 1820

This four sided glass lantern with round vent and round top was originally made of brass and was used in the Captain's quarters of a whaling ship. Ship's lanterns were the same as were used on land, as they took them with them when they landed.

Post Lantern Circa late 18th Century

This is a large lantern features four sided glass and a hinged door and distinct vent top style, this lantern  produces a lot of light. It was originally mounted on a post or solid mounted to a wall. Shown with door slightly open.
